Avram Rusu is a multidisciplinary design studio specializing in architectural, interior and lighting design. Founded by architect Andreea Avram Rusu in 2004, the company currently produces two handcrafted lighting collections and a line of limited edition furniture.
Andreea’s approach is rooted in her meticulous attention to detail and drive for the highest level of quality. She derives a great deal of pleasure from all aspects of her work, both large and small – the process of reorganizing a space, designing custom built-in pieces or furniture, selecting finishes, fixtures, lighting, fabrics, art and accessories.
The company’s first product collection, FLOAT, was introduced to rave reviews in 2006. This collection is a series of modular lighting fixtures that came to fruition as a result of Andreea’s own lighting needs. The second collection, Confetti, was launched at Wanted Design in NYC this May. It is a series of handcrafted lighting fixtures that were designed to convey the look and feel of an exuberant explosion of confetti. According to Andreea, “Lighting transforms space. It is the single greatest determinant of how a space feels.”
Andreea, who was born in Romania, received her architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin. After a year with Atelier Christian de Portzamparc in Paris she came to New York City and worked with Bromley Caldari Architects before opening her eponymous studio on the Brooklyn waterfront.
Andreea has been painting, drawing and creating objects her entire life. She is very influenced by the color, shape and composition found in contemporary art and has a particular affinity for sculpture. She’s a lover of cities and the urban lifestyle, a tango dancer and an avid world traveler with a multi-cultural heritage. All these elements inform her vision and work.
